Sources & methodology

Understand what each number can tell you.

Read the source classifications, the NDS geographic estimates, and the limits of the published reports.

1. Tract classifications

The supplied NDS reports use Federal Reserve classifications of census tracts as banking deserts, potential deserts, or non-deserts. Census tracts are different from postal ZIP codes.

2. ZIP exposure

NDS combines tract conditions with a geographic crosswalk to estimate exposure in ZIP geography. Weighted geographic exposure and allocated population exposure use different denominators.

3. Comparisons

National ranks refer to 20,307 eligible ZIPs in this snapshot. Texas ranks refer to its 1,436 eligible ZIPs. County and metro pages show national ZIP ranks rather than newly calculated county or metro ranks.

Read the measures separately

Pressure index

The NDS Financial Access Pressure Index summarizes physical banking-access pressure. Higher reported values indicate more pressure. It is not a rating of a bank or an individual’s finances. This package does not include the complete calculation specification.

Population exposure

Estimated people allocated to banking-desert geography. A count measures scale; a percentage measures the share of a defined represented population.

Ties and percentiles

Multiple ZIPs can share a rank. In the national selection, score 100.0 and rank #1 appear with percentile 98.70. The supplied ranks and percentiles are preserved; they are not recalculated from these selected rows.

Geography and uncertainty

ZIP codes can intersect more than one county or metro area. A place name is context, not proof that every part of a ZIP falls inside the named area. Population-group figures are NDS estimates allocated to geography, rather than direct counts of individual banking behavior. Overlapping groups should not be summed.

The report package does not supply margins of error or a full uncertainty model. The presence of a zero in a table should be read within its reported measure; a missing value should not be treated as zero.

Source dates and report coverage

The underlying observation year is not supplied in this report package. The website’s release date describes the publication update, not a refresh of banking conditions.

This edition publishes selected national and population-group rankings, a Texas report, a San Antonio–New Braunfels metro report, a Bexar County report, and one detailed ZIP profile. The source ranking universe is broader than the records published here.

Table downloads reproduce the records displayed on each page. They are not a download of the complete national source database.
